Kanji/Kennipes


Kanji/Kennipes is made from Ponni raw rice and urad dal.It is a unique but common dish of Sourashtra people.During my childhood my mom use to make on sunday mornings especially with Pudina Thokku that goes very well with this.Not only at my house this use to be every Sourashtra people sunday's breakfast.It is a healthy dish,adding milk and coconut paste to this dish makes the body cool.Urad dal in the rice gives a nutty flavor.It is light and easily digestible.The recipe of Kanji/Kennipes follows.

Ingredients-
Ponni raw rice- 1 cup (200 gms)
Urad dal-1/4th cup (50-60gms)
Thinly sliced Coconut-3/4th cup/half of coconut shell/150 gms
Boiled Milk-1 cup
Poppy seeds-2 tsp
Salt-1 to taste

Instructions-

1.Take 1 cup of raw rice and 1/4th cup of urad dal.Soak in water for 10 mins.
2.Take a pressure cooker.Heat it with 4 cups of water.( Here it is double than usual.)As the rice starts boiling close the lid and turn the flame to low.Let it cook for 10 minutes.
3.Take a blender or mixie jar.Add 3/4th cup of  thinly sliced coconut and 2 tsp of poppy seeds.Grind to fine paste using minimal water.
4.After 10 mins let the steam go away.Remove the lid and add 1 cup of  boiled milk.Give a good mix and add required amount of salt.

5.Add the coconut and poppy seeds paste into this and mix it.Let it boil for 5 minutes.Add 1 cup of water.Again boil it for a minute and switch off the flame.

6.Kanji Sapadu is ready.You can serve hot with pickle or Pudina Thokku.
